Structural Framing and Plan display

When we link a Structural Revit file that has structural bracing into an architectural RVT project,

Revit does NOT show the true cut section in the floor plan (based on the view range settings). For eg. the bracing looks like this in plan:

However, if we cut a detail section or callout, it looks like:

image

which is the correct representation based on the cut plane and view range.

This is unacceptable. Revit should also show the bracing in plan view types correctly. This can lead to lots of coordination issues. To make Revit display the bracing correctly, ask your structural engineer to

  • Open the steel bracing family.
  • Go to Settings > Family Category and Parameters.
  • Clear the checkbox for "Show family pre-cut in plan views".

  • Reload the family back into the project.
  • After this is done, Revit show the bracing in plan like:

    Even though the architect can edit the structural family to make this change, Architect’s edits in the structural file will be overridden when the structural file is updated next time by the architect. So, it is better if the structural engineer makes the edit it.

    Make section tag visible in Floor plan but not in enlarged plans!

    When you create a Section in your enlarged plan, Revit puts the scale of the parent view in the "Hide at scales coarser than" parameter in the
    View Properties. This helps in such a way that if you create a section in a 1/4" plan, the section tag won't be visible in 1/8" plan. If you create the section in the 1/8" plan, the section tag will be visible in all 1/4" plans.

    However, if you want the section tag to be visible in the 1/8" plan and NOT in 1/4" plans, Revit does not have any inbuilt options, yet. The following workaround (use it at your own risk) might work for you:

    1. Select the section tag that you don't want to see in enlarged 1/4" floor plans. Go to its properties and change its Discipline to say, Electrical (It should be architectural to begin with)
    2. It should disappear from ALL views.
    3. Go the the view property of the 1/8" floor plan and change its Discipline to Coordination. The section tag will be visible only there.
    4. I don't know what else this change will screw up.

    Changing section tag tail

    Revit has different types of “section tags” depending on the view we create – be it Building section or Wall section or Detail section.

    The tail of the Detail View tag is along the section cut and not perpendicular to it.

    One of our projects wanted a perpendicular tail. Here is how we created it. Fairly simple.

    1. Go to menu Setting > View Tags > Section tags.
    2. The default Detail View tag uses: “Section Tail - Filled Horizontal : 3/8" x 3/32” tail. One can just change it to “Section Tail - Filled : 3/32" x 3/8", if you want to edit the type itself (all the detail view tags in the project will use this tail). Else you can duplicate the type and create a new one.

    3. If you created a duplicate type: Select one of the Detail view tag in the drawing area and go to its properties. Go to its type properties and select the new tail type you created.

    Dependent views conversion changes

    A dependent elevation or dependent section view cannot have its own view depth / cut plane. (This is true for the plan views also, however, because we don’t get a separate view tag for the plan views, there is less confusion there) Dependent views of elevation / sections have their own view tags, and the cut plane and view depth are visible, but cannot be edited! To change the view depth or cut plane of the dependent elevation / section, you have to change the view depth / cutplane of the parent view.
    To convert a dependent view to an independent view, right click on the view in the Project browser, and select "Convert to Independent"
